Nisar Ahmed

Nisar Ahmed’s canvases are dominated by sensuous female figures, usually in a unique profile, surrounded by very decorative patterns and designs. The figures are juxtaposed by the image of a sparrow, like an imaginative bird. He believes women and birds have similar anguish in our society, both struggle to come out of a cage. The backgrounds of Ahmed’s paintings are painted in a traditional miniature manner. In most compositions, the female figures are placed before the “Haveli” interior with Islamic canopies in Chughtai style. However, some are carefully rendered with unusual textures or chess-like designs in order to fill up the open space in the background. Inspired by local literature, he uses flowers, birds, pottery, and other traditional ornaments as complementary elements in his work.
